lifestyle newborn photography – style guide

Congratulations on your growing family!

I’m so excited you are here as you consider your options for documenting your baby’s perfect newness and the fleeting moments of the earliest days as the newest member of your tribe.

I choose to document newborns by following your baby’s lead and pursing lifestyle imagery instead of the posted studio-style images of years past.

I want you to have a clear picture of what a newborn session with me may look like. Please read through to learn more about my goals for your newborn session. See if this style and approach resonates with you. If so, I’d love to be a part the joy of welcoming your new baby to this world and documenting those sweet moments in their first days as part of your family.

what is a lifestyle newborn session?
At-home lifestyle newborn sessions are about photographing your new life with your new baby. I aim to capture your baby in their environment… in their nursery, or curled up with you in bed, or wherever you feel most comfortable and relaxed. If you have older children, I recommend having a friend or family member at the house who can watch the sibling(s) before and after we include them so that we can also get individual shots with mom and dad. I will also photograph your baby alone and while i will pose the baby for these shots, it is all within the realm of what a baby would actually do on his/her own. I follow baby-led posing, allowing your newborn to rest comfortably in positions they naturally want to be.

.

where will we shoot?
Your lifestyle session will take place in your home, most often in your master bedroom, living room and/or baby’s nursery. We can also photograph on your porch or in your yard, depending on the time of year and time of day of your session. Please, do not worry about your house being a mess—you will have JUST had a baby! All you need to do to prepare is open the blinds or curtains to let in as much light as possible.

.

do you bring props?
No. I want to keep your session as natural and timeless as possible. However, we will be in your home, surrounded by your special things. if you have something you’d like to incorporate, definitely ask and I’m happy to brainstorm with you. If your husband is a musician, i am not the photographer that’s going to pose your naked baby on top his guitar. However, i’d LOVE to photograph your baby resting in your arms, watching on as dad plays a few chords. That’s much more up my alley.

 .

okay, no props, but do you bring anything?
Yes! I do bring an assortment of things to all newborn sessions. I bring swaddles, blankets, hats and headbands, for girls. There is nothing you need to provide at all except for a well-fed baby.

.

what can I do to prepare for the session?
This is such a special, fleeting, emotional time in your family’s life. Your only task is to relax and try to enjoy it. Parents tend to stress because this is a new experience and because they want things to be “perfect.”  However, just take your baby’s lead and allow him/her to dictate the shoot.  If your baby wants to eat every 20 minutes, that’s okay. If he/she only wants to be held and does not even want you to think about putting him/her down, that’s okay too. Just focus on relaxing and cuddling with your sweet new baby and i will focus on creating images that you will cherish forever.

lastly, what does a lifestyle newborn shoot look like?
