let’s be honest, i know absolutely nothing about the life of waiting for someone to come home from war, and i really, really hope i never do. i’m not cut out for it.
while we were living in los angeles, i went down to get the mail and picked up a packet addressed to michael which on the envelope it said, in bold letters, “YOU’VE BEEN DRAFTED”.
i don’t know why i wasn’t thinking properly, but i immediately thought that michael had been drafted to go to war. i mean, we ARE at war, and he is a 20-something year-old male, and my heart stopped. i tore into the envelope as fast as i could standing by myself in the apartment lobby thinking our life had just changed, and then saw the first page of the papers inside said, “you’ve been drafted by the buccaneers to be an ultimate fan!!”
i didn’t know whether to laugh at myself (there is no draft!!), or cry with relief over dodging a bullet that wasn’t even ever fired, or write a scathing letter of complaint to the bucs!
anyways, happy memorial day to those that do, or have, lived the life of waiting. and to those, long ago, that did get that letter… a real one.
