groups are formed all over the world and anyone can participate, and it’s free. you go online and find a group in your area and choose which one you’d to join. being in a big city i had a lot of choices but went with a group meeting in venice to photograph the venice canals, mainly just because i’d never seen the venice canals despite living so close to them.
the whole point of the event is to meet up with other people, walk around for an hour somewhere in your city, and take lots of pictures. then, after the event, you upload your two favorite images onto your group’s site so that you can see what others came away with. it’s fun to see such a range of styles and perspectives although we all followed the same path.
here are some of my photos from the day:
and here are the two i uploaded to share with the group.
everyone has a week or two to get their photos up and then the group leader chose a winner. you can see all of the photos from my group, including the image that won right here.
each of the winning photos from every group (lots and lost of groups from around the world) are then entered into being to overall winner. you can see the overall winner and the top 10 runners up here. take a look. images from australia to belgium to india to pittsburgh, pa.
i’ve talked a lot of about winners just now, but it’s really just about doing the walk itself.
i’d like to do it again next year for sure.
also, scott kelby (as in head cheese of the kelby photowalk and kelbytraining.com and editor in chief of photoshop user magazine and layers magazine and basically one of the most well known, most prolific, most published guys in photography) lead the ybor city walk in tampa!!! some crazy lucky people got to hang out with scott kelby, and watch him photograph! i would have just stared at him the whole time. and then i think i would have been too shy to post my two pictures to his group….
if you are curious, you can see a list of all of the walks. it’s fun to click around and see the photos taken in cities near and far.
