my husband’s family dog, that he grew up with, passed away this morning.
michael was so very upset last night when we gathered at his house to be with his parents and say goodbye to shana. it was very clear it was to be her last night.
i was surprised by how emotional my very un-emotional husband was, but this was the first close family member he has ever lost in his lifetime and one he loved so much. shana slept beside him every night during his growing-up years from the time michael was a 10 year old boy and she a baby beagle puppy. now, 16 years later, it was time to say goodbye.
we now sleep in bed with our own beagle, meeka (and our little mutt mckinley, too), and i know for sure we would not have meeka if it weren’t for shana. when michael decided we needed a dog in our lives, 6 years ago, he knew right away that dog would be a beagle, just like his shana. meeka is definitely one of the very best things in my life, so to that i owe shana so, so much.
i took these photographs on monday, just a few days ago…
she lived for 16 years in a comfortable home, with food and treats (hot dogs!), and a big back yard, and a soft bed, and people that loved her.
i think it was a very good life lived.
