yesterday, we had our best wedding anniversary ever. (and also our first and only)
we decided we’d follow the traditional wedding anniversary gift list (at least until we get sick of it), so this first year is paper. i thought i’d be very easy to shop for since i have a small obsession with most paper products (wall calendars, planners, books, magazines, photographs, prints, stationery, stationery, stationery…) but i had a hard time buying for michael. if i gave him any of the above mentioned products he would be entirely underwhelmed. but it eventually donned on me that tickets are paper!
ever since we’ve been living in LA michael has been wanting to go to a los angeles lakers game and we just hadn’t gotten around to it and made it happen. so i decided that would be my gift to him. he is really excited!!
surprisingly, michael had the same idea for me! but minus the lakers part… he also decided to get us tickets but chose cirque du soleil, which we loooove. there was very conveniently a new traveling cirque show in town called kooza and it’s set up right in santa monica along side the pier. we went last night, on our actual anniversary, and had such a good time!
michael also gifted me with lolita lempicka perfume. although entirely un-paper related, michael is obsessed with it and wanted me to wear it. if it were just called lolito lempicko cologne he would wear it himself. in fact he was smelling the bottle yesterday and said, “are you suuuure this smells like lady perfume?”
earlier in the week i’d gotten michael an anniversary card and had warned him that i had done so. reason being, michael doesn’t usually think of buying cards whereas i usually do. so it ends up being that i have a card for him but he doesn’t have one for me, which then makes him feel bad and he hates when that happens (even though i don’t really care so much as he does). so i warned him about a week before, “just so you know, i bought you an anniversary card…”
we’ll yesterday morning i presented him with the card i’d gotten him and his eyes went wide and he said, “oh shoot!! ummmm.. we aren’t doing cards yet… ummm later… even though i already have your card, you know…. it’s just in the other room…” so we put the card aside and went on with our day, which mostly consisted of errands.
one stop of the day was paper source (a stationery and paper shop) where i went to get a card for my friend whitney who has a wedding shower this weekend (!!) and as i was browsing the wedding shower cards michael was suspiciously reviewing some cards also. he then picks a card and asks, “what does this say?” – the card read “te quiero mucho” – i translated it to him (i love you very much). and he said, “oh, just wondering…” and pretended to put it back. i paid for whitney’s card and was then made to stand with my back turned while michael purchased something of his own.
the rest of the day went great. bagels and errands and then back home to get ready for the show. I got dressed and then put on all my jewelry from our wedding day in a really unfair test to see if michael would notice. he didn’t.
afterward, at dinner, i asked him, “notice anything about my jewelry?”
he guessed, “it’s all cleaned?” no.
“oh! it’s all silver?” no.
i hinted, “something related to today…”
“oh! you wore all that stuff at our wedding!” third time’s the charm. 🙂
later that night, with just 20 minutes of our anniversary left, i put michael’s card on his pillow as i climbed into bed and he came in, saw it, and made a u-turn back out to riffle through our bags from the day and go into the drawer that keeps our spare pens.
he came back in all casual and said, “oh yeah cards, let me just go get yours where i’ve been keeping it for the past week…”
te quiero mucho.
